Overview

GeoGebra is an interactive mathematical learning platform used by students and teachers worldwide, from primary school to university. Behind a growing product was an equally growing need for consistency, making a scalable design system the natural next step.

Where it all started?

Although the need for a design system was clear, there wasn't a single source of truth that documented how the product should be built. Design decisions were scattered across multiple files, outdated documentation, and team knowledge, making it difficult for teams to stay aligned.

Before creating anything new, the first step was understanding what already existed—reviewing documentation, identifying reusable patterns, and uncovering the foundations that would shape the new system.

What changed?

With a clearer understanding of the existing system, the focus shifted to building a shared foundation that could support the entire product. Existing patterns were refined, reusable components were introduced, and documentation was reorganized into a structure that was easier to navigate and maintain.

Just as importantly, the project helped establish a shared language between design and development. Aligning terminology, components, and documentation made collaboration smoother and created a system that could evolve alongside the product.

The outcome

The design system became a single source of truth that supported designers, developers, product owners, and content creators alike. It simplified maintenance, improved collaboration across teams, and created a scalable foundation for future product growth.
